(Full Length) A retired Vietnam-era Air Force Pilot sits in a VA hospital battling disease that has been linked to the chemicals he spent two years spraying during his tour of duty.
His bigger fight is for the equal treatment of his twin brother, and others like him, who suffered similar physical consequences after the war.
When he is about to give up all hope and faith in the country he loves and swore to defend, he discovers something startling about the woman treating him, learning that the destruction of war can sometimes lead to the creation of something truly beautiful.
Take a look at an Equity staged reading of the play produced at Lynn University as part of the Jan McArt New Play Reading Series. Produced at the Wold Performing Arts Center in Boca Raton, FL, and directed by Wayne Rudisill, the reading starred Arelette Del Toro, Peter Galman, Aaron Bower-Kemper, and Steven Chambers Wilson.
“One of the dangers of writing political "message" plays is that so often they should be essays. Burdick deftly avoids that trap showing us the story behind the statement (and it is a literal statement delivered by a VA oncologist to Congress). AGENT OF CHANGE brings up facts and history, all compromised by the fallibility of memory, especially from a mind simultaneously abetted and hindered by morphine. The play also confronts larger themes of legacy, accountability and redemption. There are several moments of simple yet staggering beauty. Great roles, especially for two older actors and an Asian actress. Kudos! ”
- Scott Sickles, Playwright
“Karma has caught up and come to collect, or so Vietnam veteran and cancer patient Tom Gardner suggests early on in this disarmingly moving work by Greg Burdick. The plot is so well handled that there actually is an air of fate at work here, nevertheless Burdick's bedridden pilot is drained, drugged, pushed, and taxed - and requires an actor of considerable skill. The most gorgeous component, however, is Dr Keo. It is a testament to Burdick's abilities how engaging this character is when, in her first scene, she's initially committing to bedside manner, but her journey is the heart.”
- Ricardo Soltero-Brown, Playwright
“In this finely-crafted meditation on the Veteran experience, Burdick trains a bright light on the elusive nature of healing, as his well-developed characters move backwards and forwards from the traumas of the past, towards an uncertain future. Featuring parts for mature actors, with powerful imagery and themes, this work feels both raw and yet totally accessible. Wouldn't it be amazing to see this performed for — or by — clients in V.A. or rehabilitative hospitals?”
